Spiderwebs
Overview: First we draw a spider web with white oil pastel and a spider at
the bottom, then we paint the whole page with watercolors. In this
lesson students learn about how oil based materials will repel water
based materials.
1- With the white oil pastel draw 2 diagonal lines to make a big "X" on the top 2/3 of the page. (There needs to be space at the bottom of the page for the spider.)
2- Draw a vertical line that passes through the middle of the "X", the line should stop about 3 inches from the bottom of the page. Then draw one horizontal line that crosses through the middle of the "X", it should go all the way from the right edge of the page to the left edge.
3- Draw a line spiraling from the outside to the center. Tell them to pretend that their oil pastel is a spider jumping from strand to strand. Each of the lines should curve toward the center point like it's magnetically attracted to the center point of the web.
4- Draw a spider at the end of the vertical strand with a brown or black oil pastel. Remind the students that spiders have 8 legs, so there should be 4 legs on each side.
5- Watercolor the whole page!
